The report also criticized the treatment of contract workers forced into slavery, citing several shortcomings at the labor council.

Crackdown

In response, Minister of the Interior Lee Yi-yang (李逸洋) said on Tuesday that the government would step up its efforts to crack down on human trafficking and has outlawed cross-border matchmaking to curb the problem.

Lee said the government was determined to devote more energy and resources to clamp down on human trafficking.

The newly revised immigration law prohibits the establishment of new marriage matchmaking firms, he said.

As for existing matchmaking firms, they would be subject to stricter regulations and monitoring to prevent cross-border trafficking in the guise of marriage matchmaking, he said.
