Former premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) plans to file a defamation lawsuit against former legislator Lin Ruey-tu (林瑞圖), former Government Information Office minister Pasuya Yao (姚文智) said yesterday.
On behalf of Hsieh and accompanied by lawyer Chuang Ruey-hsiung (莊瑞雄), Yao held a press briefing to respond to Lin's allegations against Hsieh.
Hsieh was said to hope that filing the lawsuit would help curb the growing tendency for people to slander others.
Lin, of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), has alleged that Taiwan Development Corp (TDC) chairman Su Teh-chien (蘇德建) gave NT$3 million (US$93,620) to Hsieh's relatives when Hsieh was premier in an attempt to solicit his influence in Su's bid for the firm's chairmanship.
Chuang said that Hsieh and his relatives have no financial ties to Su and that Lin's accusations were unfounded.
Lin also accused Hsieh of illegally helping Yu Shih-yi (游世一), general manager of Kuan-Pin Co, to profit from some land acquisition projects while Hsieh was Kaohsiung mayor.
But Chuang said that the land projects did not require Hsieh's approval.
