Hualien County launched the nation's first "non-smoking community" yesterday, embracing the idea of keeping neighborhoods free from secondhand smoke. The head of the Hualien County Health Bureau said that by making Fuhsing community in Fengbin Village (豐濱) a non-smoking community, the bureau hoped to help smokers quit and allow non-smokers to enjoy a clean environment. He said the bureau would offer all necessary aid to residents of the community and evaluate the results of setting up the non-smoking community in three months' time. A resident of Fengbin Village said that with its previous experience in establishing a "safe community," the village should also be able to tackle the issue of smoking without any difficulties.
