President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday decorated Oscar-winning film director Ang Lee (李安) with a medal of honor in recognition of his contribution to the nation's film industry. Lee, recent winner of the Oscar for best director for Brokeback Mountain, received the Order of the Brilliant Star, second class, from Chen at the Presidential Office. Lee said that he believed his late father would be very proud of him and hoped that he would continue to make contributions to the industry. Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮), who met Lee after the medal ceremony, said Lee is a testimony to the "soft power" concept she champions. While Lu expressed the hope to see Lee direct a local movie, Lee told Lu that it was more important to cultivate young talent.
