The head of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday that it is busy promoting the "Directly Observed Treatment, Short course (DOTS) " program -- one of the government's key measures in the control of aggressive pulmonary tuberculosis outbreaks. In order to carry out the DOTS program more efficiently and effectively, the CDC budgeted NT$180 million (US$5.5 million) this year, and the money will be used for employing and training DOTS care workers who will attend to tuberculosis patients who have given a positive sputum smear, and monitor their intake of medicine, he said. Experts in the DOTS program from the US, which has been implementing the same program for more than 20 years, will be invited to give professional training to local DOTS care workers, he said.
