    Friday, Apr 14, 2006, Page 3

The number of fires nationwide dropped 22.3 percent last year from 2004 according to recently released statistics from the Ministry of the Interior. There were a total of 5,139 fires nationwide, a 13-year low. The number of fires has been dropping since 1999, when there were a record 18,254 blazes. Fires caused 139 casualties last year, a 13.1 percent decrease from the 160 people killed in 2004. The statistics also show that the No.1 cause of fires last year were overheated and overloaded electrical wires, with a total of 1,533 fires, followed by arson in 568 cases and cigarette ashes in 555 fires. The ministry said most electrically induced fires took place in Taipei County, followed by Taoyuan County, and then Taipei City. Most of the arson cases occurred in Taipei County, followed by Taipei City and Taoyuan County. Local fire departments, in conjunction with civic groups, have begun making visits to older buildings and areas to inspect and educate residents on firesafety.
