Huang, a senior student from the Department of Fine Arts of the National Taiwan Normal University, used the traditional Chinese brush and ink art to draw an outline of Yushan, with the characters for Taiwan drawn inside the shape of the mountain.
"I wanted to use the most simple way to draw the mountain, so I chose brush and ink. A picture drawn from brush and ink can also express our feelings toward the land and the people," Huang said.
"Moreover, I have tried -- through this logo -- to express the idea that the Taiwanese are always smart enough to work out resolutions whenever there are problems," Huang added.
The Government Information Office held an Internet competition from Dec. 17 last year to Jan. 15 with voters selecting five images -- hand puppets, Yushan, Taipei 101, delicious Taiwanese dishes and the endangered Formosan Landlocked Salmon -- for designers to choose from.
A total of more than 1,400 participants were divided into five groups, based on the image they had chosen to depict. More than 400 participants selected Taipei 101, and 350 people picked the Formosan Landlocked Salmon. The participants ranged in age from 14 to 52. Judges also selected the best three logos for each of the five groups.

The storm’s structure is relatively loose and conditions for strengthening are limited, WeatherRisk analyst Wu Sheng-yu (吳聖宇) said on Facebook. Images of destroyed pagers analyzed by Reuters showed a format and stickers on the back that were consistent with pagers made by Gold Apollo. A senior Lebanese security source told Reuters that Hezbollah had ordered 5,000 pagers from Taiwan-based Gold Apollo. "The product was not
COLD FACTS: ‘Snow skin’ mooncakes, made with a glutinous rice skin and kept at a low temperature, have relatively few calories compared with other mooncakes Traditional mooncakes are a typical treat for many Taiwanese in the lead-up to the Mid-Autumn Festival, but a Taipei-based dietitian has urged people not to eat more than one per day and not to have them every day due to their high fat and calorie content. As mooncakes contain a lot of oil and sugar, they can have negative health effects on older people and those with diabetes, said Lai Yu-han (賴俞含), a dietitian at Taipei Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. “The maximum you can have is one mooncake a day, and do not eat them every day,” Lai
