Lin Yiwen is head of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, although she was born in China and has never visited the place she claims to represent.
In her first meeting with reporters since taking office, Lin vehemently voiced China's claims over Taiwan, denouncing President Chen Shui-bian (
"Chen Shui-bian ... is undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," said Lin, who was born in Shandong Province but whose official biography lists her hometown as Tainan, Taiwan.
The league is one of China's eight "democratic parties" -- nominally independent groups whose role is to provide advice and support to the Chinese Communist Party, and bolster its claims of multiparty government.
Lin's league purports to represent the interests of Taiwanese within China's communist system.
That includes helping boost Taiwanese investment in China and facilitating cultural, and scientific exchanges.

Considering that most countries issue more than five denominations of banknotes, the central bank has decided to redesign all five denominations, the bank said as it prepares for the first major overhaul of the banknotes in more than 24 years.
