The number of visitors from Japan increased significantly in the first quarter of this year and even outpaced the number of Japan-bound Taiwanese tourists, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications said yesterday.
A total of 800,000 foreigners visited the country in the first quarter of this year, up 18.8 percent from the same period of last year, according to statistics compiled by the Tourism Bureau.
Japan remained the largest source of foreign visitors, followed by Hong Kong/Macau, the US, South Korea and Singapore.
Japanese visitors registered a 50.6 percent rise from the year-earlier level, followed by South Koreans, with a 26.91 growth rate.

Taiwan-Japan Travel Passes are available for use on public transit networks in the two countries, Taoyuan Metro Corp said yesterday, adding that discounts of up to 7 percent are available. A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said. Starlux Airlines, Taiwan’s newest international carrier, has announced it would apply to join the Oneworld global airline alliance before the end of next year. In an investor conference on Monday, Starlux Airlines chief executive officer Glenn Chai (翟健華) said joining the alliance would help it access Taiwan.
