Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Legislator Lo Chih-ming (羅志明) paid a visit to Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan's (連戰) Taipei home yesterday to search for national valuables that the TSU accused Lien of possessing.
Upon arriving at Lien's apartment building, however, Lo and an assistant scuffled with members of the pan-blue social group the Concentric Patriotism Association of the ROC.
The controversy began when the KMT legislative caucus held a press conference yesterday morning urging former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) to return to the Academia Historica a number of cultural objects he received during his persidential term.
Lee, it is has been reported previously, keeps many of the gifts and objects received during interactions with foreign dignitaries in a nationally-owned warehouse in Taoyuan County.
Later yesterday, the TSU, which Lee founded, held a retaliatory press conference in which it reported that Lee has already agreed to give the keys of the storage house to the institution. Lien should, in turn, also return similar artifacts obtained during his tenure as vice president, the TSU charged.
"When Lien participated in diplomatic activities [in his capacity as vice president], he gave all documents or gifts received to the president," responded KMT spokesperson Chang Jung-kung (張榮恭). "Lien did not keep those objects for himself; TSU members, please do not overreact when putting on this `show.'"
