The Korea Times said in an editorial yesterday that the Seoul government should reopen direct air routes between Korea and Taiwan as quickly as possible, regardless of any pressure from Beijing.
The air route was suspended in 1992, when Seoul severed diplomatic ties with Taipei in exchange for normalizing ties with Beijing. As a result, travelers from both sides suffered difficulties, including problems with seat booking and paying over the odds for tickets, said the newspaper.
The editorial claimed that the restoration of regular flights between the two countries is mainly dependent on the Seoul government, which has repeatedly turned down overtures from Taipei, allegedly due to objections from Beijing.
When it announced the breaking of diplomatic ties with Taipei, the Seoul government became the target of criticism not only from inside Korea and Taiwan but also from the international community, the editorial said.

F-16 Block 70/72 are newly manufactured F-16 jets built by Lockheed Martin to the standards of the F-16V upgrade package. Republic of China

A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
