Interracial marriages often ending in divorce

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Tuesday, Oct 22, 2002, Page 4

Among the 223,000 couples that got married in Taiwan last year, one in every 8.8 was an interracial marriage, according to government statistics that were released yesterday.

The statistics compiled by the Ministry of the Interior and the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics recorded a marked increase last year in the number of interracial marriages.

The figures also show that out of the 66,000 interracial marriages recorded over the past four years, 7,000 had ended in divorce, or one in 10 couples.

Oung Yu-ling, a section director in the Eden Social Welfare Foundation that was set up three months ago to support Vietnamese brides of Taiwanese men, said that she was not surprised by the figure.

Oung said that, while most of the divorces were requested by the foreign brides themselves, in some rare cases it was the men who instigated divorce proceedings. Oung claimed that the men were under the impression that, as they spent up to NT$300,000 (US$8,570) to buy their partners, they could get rid of the women if they did not meet their expectations.

Not only would these men ask for divorce, they would sometimes even ask for reimbursement.
