Taiwanese No. 1 Hsieh Su-wei fell to a 0-3 career record against Samantha Stosur as she crashed out of the second round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg on Tuesday.
World No. 83 Hsieh fell to a 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) defeat to the third seed in 1 hour, 37 minutes.
World No. 23 Stosur saved six of eight break points and converted three of seven, winning 83 of the 155 points contested to advance to a quarter-final against French 10th seed Caroline Garcia.
The Australian said she had to recover after the disappointment of missing the opportunity to end the match in the 10th game of the second set.
“I served for it at 5-4, then lost serve,” Stosur told the WTA Web site. “You just need to knuckle down and keep focused, think about what had been working in the match and get back to those things. It would have been hard having been serving for the match then playing a third set and I lost serve again at 6-5. Then it was all about a good start in the tiebreak.”
It was Hsieh’s third career loss to the Australian following defeats in Rome and Dubai in 2013.
“I don’t remember the other encounters with Su-wei, just the scores. They were in different conditions. My coach had a look, but two years is a pretty long time in tennis,” Stosur said. “It was another good match against a tricky opponent. It was closer than the score looked.”
Garcia defeated Swiss qualifier Jil Belen Teichmann 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 in 1 hour, 48 minutes.
Russian qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva also advanced to the quarter-finals, rallying from a set down to edge Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4).
In the first round, second seed Sloane Stephens of the US also had to rally from a set down to defeat Donna Vekic of Croatia 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, while Russian seventh seed Elena Vesnina edged Zheng Saisai of China 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7/5).
