ACF Fiorentina stayed top of Serie A despite losing 2-1 at SSC Napoli on Sunday, after title rivals Inter were held to a 0-0 draw by Juventus.
Both Inter and Juventus hit the woodwork and had several other chances in an entertaining match at a packed San Siro. It was only the second match of the 80 games played in Serie A this season to finish goalless.
“Am I satisfied? Not really. You play to win, but at the end a point is OK,” Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. “We are fairly well placed in the standings and I want to win. We can do better, that is my aim. If we continue to work hard, we will improve.”

In Naples, Lorenzo Insigne’s stellar start to the season continued as the forward — who had to pull out of the Italy squad last week through injury — opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half with his sixth goal of the campaign, setting a new personal record.
Inter are third, a point behind Fiorentina and below AS Roma on goal-difference.
Four-time defending champions Juventus are just three points above the drop zone, and 10 below Fiorentina.
“We have to grow, we have to be more clinical when we get into the box and in choosing our final passes too,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “A point does not change our position in the table. We need to be aware that we have to cut the gap before Christmas and be in the running in March.”
Napoli moved into fourth place, three points behind Fiorentina, and above SS Lazio on goal-difference, who lost 2-1 at US Sassuolo — who also now have 15 points.
Atalanta BC are a point further back after easing past Carpi 3-0.
Elsewhere, substitute Panagiotis Tachtstidis — who had only just come off the bench — scored a stoppage-time winner as 10-man Genoa snatched a 3-2 win over AC Chievo Verona.
Newly promoted Frosinone beat UC Sampdoria 2-0, while Hellas Verona drew 1-1 against Udinese, and US Citta di Palermo won 1-0 at bottom side Bologna.
There was a heated atmosphere at a sold-out San Siro, with almost 80,000 vociferous fans packing the stadium for the eagerly anticipated match.
There is no love lost between the two clubs and the bitter rivalry among fans is long-standing.
Juventus came agonizingly close last season to joining Inter as the only Italian clubs to have won the treble of the Serie A, Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League titles, but they failed with the last piece of the puzzle, losing to Barcelona in Berlin.
Inter fans taunted Juventus about that in their pre-match choreography, unfurling a giant cutout of the Champions League trophy above a banner reading: “Berlin, 06.06.2015 ... you almost did it.”
They then depicted all three trophies below a banner reading: “Keep dreaming” and above a giant picture of three cartoon thieves.
The intensity of the rivalry off the pitch was reflected on it as four players were booked inside the first 16 minutes.
Inter went closest in the first half in a fierce five-minute spell. The home fans clamored for a penalty when a cross struck Leonardo Bonucci on the arm, but Ivan Perisic had nodded it onto the Juventus defender from point-blank range.
Stevan Jovetic and Mauro Icardi also went close, while Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon tipped Marcelo Brozovic’s curler onto the crossbar.
Sami Khedira had the best chance of the match in the 69th minute when he was played in by Alvaro Morata and should have given Juventus the lead — only for his effort to hit the left upright.
Fiorentina were two points clear at the top of the table going into the match, having won six of their seven games. However, Napoli were also full of confidence after a 4-0 victory at AC Milan last time out.
Napoli took the lead just 43 seconds after the interval, when Insigne burst past Nenad Tomovic down the left flank and ran onto Marek Hamsik’s deep ball before cutting in to fire a low shot into the bottom-right corner.
Nikola Kalinic leveled with a similar goal in the 73rd minute, outsprinting the Napoli defenders and running onto a brilliant Josip Ilicic ball over the top, scoring his fifth goal in eight Serie A matches.
However, Napoli were back in front just two minutes later when Gonzalo Higuain beat Ilicic to the ball, played a swift one-two with Dries Mertens and fired past Fiorentina goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
Japanese players are moving to English soccer in record numbers and more look set to follow with clubs attracted by their quality, strong work ethic and value for money. Kaoru Mitoma is the standout talent of five Japanese players in the English Premier League, with eight more in the Championship and two in League One. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, the captain of Japan, believes his compatriots are “being held in higher esteem” by English clubs compared with the past. “The staff at Liverpool ask me about lots of Japanese players, not necessarily with a view to a transfer, but just saying this or
Taiwan yesterday survived Bosnia and Herzegovina to win their Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Taipei Tennis Center. The tight series started on Saturday with world No. 123 Jason Tseng losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Mirza Basic in the opening singles matchup. However, teammate Tony Wu kept the tie even, dominating world No. 86 Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 6-1. Yesterday, 24-year-old Ray Ho and partner 25-year-old Hsu Yu-hsiou kept up the momentum, making short work of Basic and Nerman Fatic, winning 6-3, 6-4. Tseng then suffered another defeat, losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to Dzumhur in a brutal match that lasted more than two
