Louis van Gaal’s reign as manager of Manchester United got off to a rousing start on Wednesday with a 7-0 friendly victory over Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy.
In the first match of Van Gaal’s tenure, Wayne Rooney scored twice in the first half, converting a penalty in the 42nd minute after Galaxy midfielder A.J. Delagarza handled a cross from Antonio Valencia.
Three minutes later, Los Angeles defender Tommy Meyer failed to intercept Danny Welbeck’s cross, giving Rooney another chance to beat Jaime Penedo.

Welbeck had opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a long-range strike that crashed in off the post.
Youngster Reece James, 20, and Ashley Young added two goals apiece in the second half as the English Premier League club romped in the first match of their North American pre-season tour.
Van Gaal was tapped two months ago to replace the sacked David Moyes, but took the reins only after guiding the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil.
The 62-year-old Dutchman is tasked with restoring United to their position as the Premier League’s preeminent force.
He faces a big rebuilding project after United endured a miserable campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson’s hand-picked successor Moyes, finishing seventh in the Premier League and failing to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
One of Van Gaal’s tasks will be selecting a new captain after Nemanja Vidic’s departure for Italy’s Inter.
Although Rooney and Robin van Persie have been said to be among the top contenders for the job, on Wednesday the armband went to Scotland’s Darren Fletcher, although Van Gaal has said he will not rush to decide who gets the role on a full-time basis.
While Van Gaal has expressed doubts that a North American tour of more than two weeks is the best way to prepare for the Premier League season, there was no question that California fans were thrilled to get a chance to see Manchester United in action.
The picturesque Rose Bowl, site of the 1994 FIFA World Cup final, drew a crowd of 86,432 and was awash in red.
The match against the Galaxy was a curtain-raiser to the the International Champions Cup, a collection of pre-season matches featuring eight European clubs all preparing for the start of their domestic campaigns.
Manchester United play AS Roma tomorrow in Denver, Colorado, meet Inter on Tuesday next week in Washington and face Real Madrid the following Saturday in suburban Detroit where a soldout Michigan Stadium crowd is likely to number about 110,000 — projected to be the largest US crowd ever for the sport.
In another pre-season friendly on Wednesday, Marco Borriello scored in the 90th minute to give AS Roma a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Fenway Park in Boston.
There were limited chances until Borriello volleyed in a corner from in front of goal.
For the second time in three years, Fenway, the home of the Boston Red Sox, was transformed into the home of Liverpool, who are owned by Fenway Sports Group. John Henry, owner of the Red Sox, is also the controlling partner of Fenway Sports Group.
Roma beat Liverpool 2-1 at Fenway two years ago.
Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski made a diving save near the post from Rickie Lambert’s long-range shot from just outside the penalty area in the 57th minute.
Roma seemed to have the territorial edge in the first half and Liverpool a slight edge in the second in a match that had just a handful of shots on goal.
Liverpool rested a number of their star players, including captain Steven Gerrard, but the mostly red-clad crowd did not seem to mind.
Wednesday’s game was the first of four scheduled matches in the US for Liverpool, who next travel to Chicago, New York and Charlotte, North Carolina.
In the day’s other friendlies, Tottenham Hotspur beat hosts Toronto 3-2, Aston Villa blanked hosts Dallas 2-0, visitors Manchester City crushed Sporting Kansas City 4-1 and AS Monaco defeated Nacional de Medellin 4-2 in Miami.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
Japanese players are moving to English soccer in record numbers and more look set to follow with clubs attracted by their quality, strong work ethic and value for money. Kaoru Mitoma is the standout talent of five Japanese players in the English Premier League, with eight more in the Championship and two in League One. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, the captain of Japan, believes his compatriots are “being held in higher esteem” by English clubs compared with the past. “The staff at Liverpool ask me about lots of Japanese players, not necessarily with a view to a transfer, but just saying this or
Taiwan yesterday survived Bosnia and Herzegovina to win their Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Taipei Tennis Center. The tight series started on Saturday with world No. 123 Jason Tseng losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Mirza Basic in the opening singles matchup. However, teammate Tony Wu kept the tie even, dominating world No. 86 Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 6-1.
