Alex Rodriguez drew loud boos on his return home and the New York Yankees overcame Miguel Cabrera’s crushing home run off Mariano Rivera, beating Detroit 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday night and snapping the Tigers’ 12-game winning streak.
Cabrera temporarily saved the Tigers by hitting a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth off Rivera that made it 3-3. The reigning Triple Crown winner connected while still hobbling after apparently fouling a ball off himself earlier in the at-bat.

Brett Gardner grounded an RBI single with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th to end New York’s four-game losing streak.
The AL Central-leading Tigers were trying for their best string since 1934, when they tied the team record of 14 straight wins.
Gardner singled just past Cabrera’s dive at third base. Al Alburquerque (2-3) took the loss and Shawn Kelley (4-1) got the win.

In Kansas City, Missouri, Justin Maxwell homered and singled twice in a six-run sixth and Kansas City rallied to beat Boston.

Maxwell, who the Royals acquired on July 31 from the Houston Astros for a minor league pitcher, homered leading off the second.
With the Royals trailing 6-3 in the sixth, he led off the inning with a single. The Royals sent 11 men to the plate in the inning against Red Sox pitchers Jake Peavy, Drake Britton and Pedro Beato.
Peavy yielded singles to Maxwell, Mike Moustakas and Alcides Escobar to start the inning. Escobar’s RBI single finished Peavy.

Reddick was hitless in his previous 20 at-bats before connecting off Esmil Rogers with a solo blast in the second inning that hit the facing of the second deck in right. He hit another solo homer in the fifth, an opposite-field shot to left off reliever Neil Wagner, then smacked a three-run drive off Juan Perez in the sixth.
The home runs were the sixth, seventh and eighth of the season for Reddick, who has three career multihomer games. All three homers came with two outs.

Justin Upton, Chris Johnson and Brian McCann homered, Brandon Beachy pitched eight strong innings, and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 5-0 on Friday night for their 14th straight victory.
The Braves are one victory shy of tying their 2000 team for the longest winning streak since the franchise relocated to Atlanta in 1966.
Beachy (1-0) scattered three hits, allowed one walk and struck out six in eight innings to win his third start back from elbow ligament replacement surgery on June 21 last year. He made 67 of 99 pitches for strikes.
With only 15 losses at Turner Field, Atlanta improved their home winning percentage to .722, the best in the majors.
The Braves now lead the division by 15-and-a-half games.

In Cincinnati, Ohio, Joey Votto drove in a pair of runs with a single and a triple, and Bronson Arroyo recovered from his roughest outing of the season to lead the Reds over San Diego.
Cincinnati have won three straight since being embarrassed by the St Louis Cardinals at home last weekend, dropping games by scores of 13-3 and 15-2.
Arroyo (10-9) took the loss in that first game against the Cardinals, giving up seven runs in a season-low 3 2/3 innings. He was back on his game against San Diego, allowing only four hits in seven innings, including Logan Forsythe’s solo homer.
Votto drove in the first two runs off Andrew Cashner (8-6), ending the right-hander’s streak of three straight victories. Brandon Phillips added a two-run homer off Tim Stauffer.
CUBS 3, CARDINALS 0

Rusin (2-1) twice worked out of bases-loaded jams and only set the Cardinals down in order in the first. He struck out a season-high five and issued two intentional walks.
Kevin Gregg recorded his 24th save to complete the Cubs’ first shutout in St Louis since Jeremi Gonzalez tossed one on June 23, 1997.
Lance Lynn (13-6), attempting to become the National League’s first 14-game winner, labored over 6 2/3 innings despite giving up just three hits. He threw 115 pitches and was charged with all three runs. He struck out five, walked five and hit two.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
If all goes well when the biggest marathon field ever gathered in Australia races 42km through the streets of Sydney on Sunday, World Marathon Majors (WMM) will soon add a seventh race to the elite series. The Sydney Marathon is to become the first race since Tokyo in 2013 to join long-established majors in New York, London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago if it passes the WMM assessment criteria for the second straight year. “We’re really excited for Sunday to arrive,” race director Wayne Larden told a news conference in Sydney yesterday. “We’re prepared, we’re ready. All of our plans look good on
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
When details from a scientific experiment that could have helped clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva landed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the leader of the organization’s reaction was unequivocal: “We have to stop that urgently,” he wrote. No mention of the test ever became public and Valieva’s defense at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) went on without it. What effect the information could have had on Valieva’s case is unclear, but without it, the skater, then 15 years old, was eventually disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for a banned heart medication that would later
