The Uni-President Lions Chang “OEO” Tai-shan made baseball history on Wednesday evening when he scored from third on a double by Deng Chih-wei to become the first player in league history to score 1,000 runs.
Wednesday’s achievement in the Lions 10-3 win over the Lamigo Monkeys added to an impressive and long list of distinctions that includes career leader in home runs, hits and RBIs.
The veteran slugger began his illustrious career 17 seasons ago as a 19-year-old, joining the former Wei Chuan Dragons straight out of high school and setting a record as the youngest player to play professionally.
Even though total career runs scored may not attract as much attention as the other records, the Amis Aboriginal from Taitung has definitely established himself as one of the greatest hitters in the game.
“I will treasure [the record] for a long time,” the soft-spoken “Prince of the Jungle” said in a brief ceremony during the game to recognize his achievement. Tai-shan (泰山) is the Chinese name for Tarzan.
Chang will likely play out his career with the Lions, who offered him the designated hitter role in 2011 in a lineup filled with super stars after Chang had been asked by his former team, the Sinon Bulls (now the EDA Rhinos), to hang up his cleats and become the hitting coach.
There may have been doubters at the time, but Chang has proven his worth by maintaining a .309 average with 31 homers and 170 RBIs in the past two seasons.
