Angelic Swansea star Rangel feeds freezing homeless

AFP, LONDON

Swansea City full-back Angel Rangel has lived up to his first name by revealing that he spent Friday evening handing out food to homeless people after temperatures plunged in south Wales.

The 30-year-old used Twitter to locate people sleeping rough in snow-bound Swansea after being encouraged to make a gesture by his wife.

“Anyone knows the location of homeless people in Swansea? I got food going spare! #randomtweet,” he wrote.

MERCY DASH

Explaining his motives for the mercy dash, Rangel said: “We went for something to eat in a local sandwich chain and overheard the manager saying they had to throw out bags of sandwiches as they were about to close for the night.”

“My wife, Nikki, who is a very caring and charitable person, asked if we could have them for the homeless rather than see them thrown in the bin,” he said.

“They agreed and we drove around Swansea for over an hour, but couldn’t find any homeless people as it was so cold out on the streets with all the snow,” Rangel said. “We decided to tweet a plea and we were guided to a local charity shelter who look after the homeless.”

FUTURE VISITS

Rangel, who joined Swansea in 2007 when they were playing in English football’s third tier, said he would be making future visits to the shelter to lend a hand.

“They were obviously grateful and after chatting to the charity worker, it is something we are going to do on a regular basis,” he said. “It’s the least we can do, especially with it being so cold outside at the moment.”

“I don’t know if we’ll be as lucky with the free sandwiches in future, so I may have to cook some of my special Spanish omelettes instead!” Rangel said.
