West Bromwich Albion secured their first points of the Premier League season as an early goal from Peter Odemwingie beat Norwich City 1-0 at Carrow Road on Sunday.
Odemwingie was making his first start of the season after an ankle injury and the Nigerian striker had an eventful return.
He opened the scoring in the third minute after confusion in the Norwich defense, but then went from hero to zero as his second-half penalty was saved by young Norwich goalkeeper Declan Rudd.
That spot-kick miss could not spark a Norwich fightback, however, and Roy Hodgson’s team held on to end a run of three successive defeats, while the Canaries are still waiting for their first victory after last season’s promotion.
To complete a miserable day for Norwich, their striker James Vaughan was taken to hospital after an elbow from Gabriel Tamas left him with a serious facial injury.
Vaughan was flattened by Tamas at a corner in stoppage-time in an incident, missed by referee Mark Halsey, which forced the forward to see a plastic surgeon to assess the extent of the damage.
Norwich manager Paul Lambert confirmed that Tamas’ stray elbow had left its mark on Vaughan’s mouth.
“James has gone to see the plastic surgeon at the minute and it is a bad one. It has gone straight through the lip and they can’t just stitch it up, the specialist has got to look at it,” Lambert said. “He had got a really nasty gash in his upper lip, which will need a bit of work on it.”
In the day’s other game, Blackburn Rovers remained rooted to the bottom of the table after Bobby Zamora’s equalizer gave Fulham a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.
Steve Kean’s struggling side had taken the lead through a fine strike from Ruben Rochina in the first half, but Zamora equalized soon after to leave Blackburn still waiting for their first league win this season.
There was more bad news for Kean when midfielder David Hoilett was stretchered off in stoppage-time wearing a neck brace after a nasty collision with Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
Fulham are also without a victory in their first four league games and, like Blackburn, they were unable to climb out of the bottom three after a scrappy encounter in west London.
“He’s got three or four stitches in the side of his head and a bang on his eye,” Kean said of Hoilett’s injury. “It’s not a great challenge and he’ll have some concussion. It’s a bad one. He was out for a little bit of time and it might affect him for the next game, but he’ll be fine.”
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
If all goes well when the biggest marathon field ever gathered in Australia races 42km through the streets of Sydney on Sunday, World Marathon Majors (WMM) will soon add a seventh race to the elite series. The Sydney Marathon is to become the first race since Tokyo in 2013 to join long-established majors in New York, London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago if it passes the WMM assessment criteria for the second straight year. “We’re really excited for Sunday to arrive,” race director Wayne Larden told a news conference in Sydney yesterday. “We’re prepared, we’re ready. All of our plans look good on
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
When details from a scientific experiment that could have helped clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva landed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the leader of the organization’s reaction was unequivocal: “We have to stop that urgently,” he wrote. No mention of the test ever became public and Valieva’s defense at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) went on without it. What effect the information could have had on Valieva’s case is unclear, but without it, the skater, then 15 years old, was eventually disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for a banned heart medication that would later
