Boca Juniors were knocked out of the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday after Jonathan Cristaldo’s 61st minute goal gave Argentine rivals Velez Sarsfield a 1-0 win in the second leg of their first-stage tie.
The goal gave the Argentine league champions a 2-1 aggregate victory.
Boca needed at least one goal to remain in the competition after drawing the first leg against Velez 1-1 at home.
Cristaldo scored the winner on the hour mark when Fabian Cubero clipped the ball through for the striker to fire home.
Also on Wednesday, Wellington scored a late winner as Botafogo beat Atletico Paranaense 3-2.
Atletico opened the scoring with a powerful strike by Wesley in the 32nd but Botafogo equalized in the 45th with a penalty kick converted by Lucio Flavio.
Botafogo went ahead when Gabriel scored in the 59th with Atletico equalizing in the 80th through Nei.
Penalties were needed to separate Goias and Atletico Mineiro after a 1-1 draw on the night replicated the first leg result.
The goals in normal time were scored by Junior in the 71st for Atletico and Felipe from a 78th minute penalty for Goias. Chiquinho missed the crucial penalty to hand Goias a 6-5 win in the shootout.
