Croatia striker Mladen Petric scored both goals to seal a 2-1 win at Cologne on Sunday to keep Hamburg in touch with league leaders Hoffenheim, who stay top despite losing to Bayern Munich on Friday.
Martin Jol-coached Hamburg are up to fifth and four points off Hoffenheim and Bayern thanks to Petric’s two headed first-half goals that gave his side their ninth win of the season, before Cologne scored a late consolation goal.
Wolfsburg are up to sixth after their 2-1 win over Hannover 96 whose Czech Republic striker Jiri Stajner managed to score for both sides and headed the winning goal for Wolfsburg.
After Wolfsburg’s Italian defender Cristian Zaccardo opened the scoring, Stajner scored for his side in the 59th minute, but just four minutes later Stajner was the last player to head the ball before it flew into his own net.
With time running out, Hannover goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz was shown a straight red card for bringing down Wolfsburg midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic, who was awarded a penalty. But stand-in goalkeeper Jan Rosenthal saved the spot-kick.
