Alexei Kovalev scored the lone shootout goal to give the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 victory over the St Louis Blues on Sunday night.
After the Blues missed on all three of their shots in the tiebreaker, Kovalev beat Manny Legace with a high backhander for the win.
Andrei Kostitsyn and Robert Lang scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who won for only the second time in six games after starting the season 8-1-1.

The Canadiens were 0-for-10 on the power play and have scored twice in their last 36 chances. St Louis were 1-for-9 with the man advantage.

In Chicago, Devin Setoguchi’s power-play goal with 4 minutes, 15 seconds left helped San Jose hand Chicago their first home loss in regulation this season.
Setoguchi, who also had an assist, scored on a screened shot from the high slot.
Dan Boyle scored two power-play goals for the Sharks, who went 4-for-6 with the man advantage. Milan Michalek, Joe Thornton and Jeremy Roenick also connected to help NHL-leading San Jose win their second straight to improve to 9-1-1 in their last 11.
Chicago defensemen Brian Campbell and Cam Barker each had a goal and two assists. The Blackhawks’ Kris Versteeg scored a pair of fluke goals on misplays by San Jose goalie Brian Boucher. Patrick Kane also scored for Chicago, 6-1-4 at home this season and 4-1-2 in their last seven overall.
