Ryder Cup stars Anthony Kim and Ian Poulter moved within a shot of leader Kim Wi-joong after yesterday’s third round of the Korea Open.
The South Korean had a two-under 69 for a three-round total of 10-under 203. He leads by a stroke from Anthony Kim of the US (67), Englishman Poulter (69) and South Korean pair Bae Sang-moon (67) and Kim Dae-sub (69).
Kim Wi-joong had an eventful round of five birdies and three bogeys to position himself for a tournament victory in front of home fans in the US$1 million Asian Tour event at the Woo Jeong Hills Country Club.
“Before playing this week, my goal was to finish in the top 10,” Kim Wi-joong said. “But now I feel confident enough for a win. I’ll be playing with some famous golfers tomorrow, so I’ll try to focus on my game on the final charge on Sunday.”
The famous golfer beside him will be Anthony Kim, who was unhappy with his swing and putting, but put himself in strong contention after a two-over 73 in the second round.
“My game is not where I want it to be, but I fought hard and I’m looking forward to Sunday,” Anthony Kim said.
Poulter, who had some terse words for Anthony Kim after being bumped by the celebrating American at the Ryder Cup, got two bogeys in the opening three holes, but gradually improved through the round.
Kim Dae-sub is aiming for his third Korea Open title after winning it as an amateur in 1998 and 2001.
“I had no pressure today and I feel really good,” Kim Dae-sub said.

A soccer jersey carrying a national map including disputed Western Sahara has become a hot commodity in Morocco after a diplomatic dispute with Algeria. Retailers said RS Berkane jerseys have been flying off the shelves after a Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup match against Algerian club USM Alger was canceled last month over the jerseys. “We are overwhelmed by the influx of messages and requests,” said Brahim Rabii, representative of the official RS Berkane jersey distributor. Algeria broke off diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, partly over the issue of Western Sahara. The former Spanish colony is largely controlled by Morocco, but claimed
When 42-1 underdog James ‘Buster’ Douglas shocked ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson 34 years ago at the Tokyo Dome, the result reverberated worldwide. Spectators at the 45,000-plus seater venue witnessed one of boxing’s biggest upsets as unbeaten heavyweight champion Tyson was knocked out in the 10th round by the unheralded Douglas in February 1990. Boxing returns to the famous venue on Monday for the first time since that unforgettable encounter when Japan’s undisputed super-bantamweight world champion Naoya ‘Monster’ Inoue puts his belts on the line against Mexican Luis Nery. The 31-year-old Inoue (26-0, 23 KOs) is a huge star in Japan and is just
