NATIONAL LEAGUE
The New York Mets squandered a four-run advantage and dropped back into a tie for the National League wild card with a 9-6 loss in extra innings to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.
The Mets (87-71) are now tied with the Milwaukee Brewers (87-71), who defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2, in the race for a NL postseason berth.
“It is critical that we do a better job,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel told reporters. “At this juncture, it was probably our toughest defeat.”
The Cubs, who won the NL Central title last Saturday, scored three runs in the 10th inning to break the 6-6 tie.
The Mets had let their own chances slip away, though, stranding three runners in the bottom of the ninth, where third baseman Daniel Murphy led off with a triple.
Murphy, representing the game-winning run, was unable to score after Chicago reliever Bob Howry intentionally walked two batters, then jammed Ryan Church into an infield hit that forced Murphy out at home plate.
“I had a situation to come through and just didn’t do it,” Church said.
New York had also left a runner stranded on third during each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Carlos Delgado’s third-inning grand slam put the Mets on top 5-1, but starter Oliver Perez lost it in the fifth inning where he allowed four runs.
With just four games remaining, New York is in danger of repeating last year’s late-season collapse when they lost a seven-game division lead and missed out on the playoffs.
Despite losing 10-4 to the Atlanta Braves, the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies (89-70) retained a 1.5-game divisional lead over the Mets.
In other NL games it was:
• Dodgers 12, Padres 4
• Cardinals 4, Diamondbacks 2
• Braves 10, Phillies 4
• Brewers 4, Pirates 2
• Astros 5, Reds 0
• Marlins 9, Nationals 4
• Rockies 15, Giants 6

Tampa Bay rallied from a six-run deficit to beat Baltimore 11-6 and reduce its magic number to clinch their first division title to one.

Akinori Iwamura had two hits and three RBIs for the Rays, who completed a four-game sweep. It was the ninth time this season the Orioles blew a four-run lead, most in the majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
If all goes well when the biggest marathon field ever gathered in Australia races 42km through the streets of Sydney on Sunday, World Marathon Majors (WMM) will soon add a seventh race to the elite series. The Sydney Marathon is to become the first race since Tokyo in 2013 to join long-established majors in New York, London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago if it passes the WMM assessment criteria for the second straight year. “We’re really excited for Sunday to arrive,” race director Wayne Larden told a news conference in Sydney yesterday. “We’re prepared, we’re ready. All of our plans look good on
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
When details from a scientific experiment that could have helped clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva landed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the leader of the organization’s reaction was unequivocal: “We have to stop that urgently,” he wrote. No mention of the test ever became public and Valieva’s defense at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) went on without it. What effect the information could have had on Valieva’s case is unclear, but without it, the skater, then 15 years old, was eventually disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for a banned heart medication that would later
