Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda made two crucial saves in the last five minutes to ensure a 2-1 victory at home to Sochaux, keeping them top of the French league championship on Saturday.
Marseille were cruising to victory through goals by Karim Ziani and Baky Kone, but Mevlud Erding pulled one back on a counterattack and the same player, through and one-on-one with Mandanda with a chance for an equalizer, saw his shot brilliantly saved by the leg of the France international keeper.
Then just before the final whistle, Mandanda made a reflex save low down to his right on the goal line from an Erding header, to once more keep Marseille’s one-goal advantage.

A modest Mandanda told Orange Foot television at the end of the match: “I just tried to play to my very best. At 2-0 we started to play at a lower standard. I think we were a bit scared and could have finished the match better.”
Paris Saint Germain put last week’s stuttering draw with Sochaux behind them with a 1-0 defeat of Caen, to put Paul Le Guen’s side in sixth spot.
Le Guen and the capital side’s supporters could not have wished for a better start when Guillaume Hoarau shot home from close range by the near post from Jerome Rothen’s cross from the left in the fifth minute.
PSG should have doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Horau, back after a loan spell last season at Le Havre, was set up perfectly again, this time by Ludovic Giuly, but with the goalmouth gaping he conspired to miss the unmissable.
PSG new boy, Serbia international Mateja Kezman, made his debut as an 89th minute substitute for Horau.
“We had chances to make it a clearer win,” Le Guen said.
He had praise for the goalscorer saying: “I admire Horau’s defensive play and he gave us a precious lift with the set pieces.”
PSG jumped from 11th to sixth, two points behind second-placed Le Mans who handed out a 4-1 drubbing to Nantes to make it three wins from three.
Hosts Nantes, who sacked their coach Michel Der Zakarian this week, took the lead in the 21st minute via Guirane Ndaw, but that was canceled out two minutes later by Norwegian Thorstein Helstad.
From then on it was all plain sailing for the visitors, with Modibo Maiga, Mathieu Coutadeur and Gervinho in injury time making it a night to remember for new manager Yves Bertucci.
Nice, 2-0 victors over Valenciennes, and Grenoble, who beat Monaco with a 19th minute goal from striker Daniel Moreira, are also unbeaten and lying third and fourth on goal difference.
Elsewhere, Auxerre came away from their visit to Lorient with a 2-0 win and Nancy came from behind to see off Le Havre 2-1.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
Japanese players are moving to English soccer in record numbers and more look set to follow with clubs attracted by their quality, strong work ethic and value for money. Kaoru Mitoma is the standout talent of five Japanese players in the English Premier League, with eight more in the Championship and two in League One. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, the captain of Japan, believes his compatriots are “being held in higher esteem” by English clubs compared with the past. “The staff at Liverpool ask me about lots of Japanese players, not necessarily with a view to a transfer, but just saying this or
Taiwan yesterday survived Bosnia and Herzegovina to win their Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Taipei Tennis Center. The tight series started on Saturday with world No. 123 Jason Tseng losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Mirza Basic in the opening singles matchup. However, teammate Tony Wu kept the tie even, dominating world No. 86 Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 6-1. Yesterday, 24-year-old Ray Ho and partner 25-year-old Hsu Yu-hsiou kept up the momentum, making short work of Basic and Nerman Fatic, winning 6-3, 6-4. Tseng then suffered another defeat, losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to Dzumhur in a brutal match that lasted more than two
