Taiwanese duo lose final
Taiwanese tennis duo Chan Yung-jan (詹詠然) and Chuang Chia-jung (莊佳容) lost the final of the women's doubles at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells California on Sunday. Top-seeded pair Lisa Raymond of the US and Samantha Stosur of Australia won 6-3, 7-5.
Chan said that despite the defeat playing against the world's top women's pair was a rare experience that would help her improve.
Despite their defeat Chan and Chuang moved up in the world doubles rankings to 21 and 18 respectively, the highest ever for Taiwanese women.
Taiwan earn medal haul
Taiwan's team at the this year's World Police and Fire Games in Adelaide, Australia, had accumulated six gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze through Sunday. The event, which runs from March 16 to Thursday, includes traditional Olympic sports as well as competitions specific to fire and police departments. Taiwan's team is made up of entrants from various jurisdictions throughout the country. Competitors from the Special Police First Headquarters SWAT team Hao Hsu-heng (郝旭恆), Chu Cheng-hui (朱承輝), Lin Sheng-yu (林聖育) and Tsai Wen-pin (蔡文彬) earned six golds and two silvers in various team and individual shooting competitions, while Chiayi County trooper Tseng Kuan-ying (曾冠螢) earned a bronze in wrestling.
US cyclist out in front
US cyclist Shawn Milne of the Maxxis team won the first stage of this year's Tour de Taiwan international cycling event on Sunday, with Askari Hossein of the Giant Asian racing Team snatching first place in the Asian racing category, and Wu Po-hung (巫帛宏) coming in as the top-ranked Taiwanese rider. Milne finished the 88km course in a time of 1 hour 57 minutes ahead of more than 100 riders from 15 countries.
Wong Kam Po (黃金寶) of Hong Kong won the second stage in Pingtung yesterday, but Milne held on to the overall lead after completing the 111km course. It was a photo finish between Wong and five other competitors, but camera replays showed that Wong crossed the line ahead of the pack with a time of 2 hours 33 minute and 21 seconds. The third stage will be held in Chiayi today, followed by the remaining stages in Changhua tomorrow, Taichung on Thursday, Changhua-Taipei on Friday and the final stage in Taipei on Saturday.
