Inter Milan won its 17th straight game in the Serie A on Sunday, beating Catania 5-2.
Walter Samuel scored the first goal for Inter with a header in the 45th minute. Santiago Solari, Fabio Grosso, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Julio Ricardo Cruz all added goals after the break.
Gionatha Spinesi and Giorgio Corona scored for Catania in the second half.
"The season isn't over yet," Cruz said. "We have a big lead but there are still many games to play."
Inter leads the Serie A with 66 points. Second-place AS Roma, which has 52 points, beat Reggina 3-0 with goals from Francesco Tavano, Philippe Mexes and Christian Panucci.
"What I like about this Roma is our collective spirit," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. "Today we displayed great professionalism."
Palermo, which is third with 44 points, drew 1-1 with Atalanta on Saturday.
Massimo Ambrosini headed in a 90th-minute winner to help AC Milan beat Sampdoria 1-0 at San Siro, where both teams played with 10 men.
Massimo Oddo was sent off after 10 minutes for an innocuous-looking tackle on Sampdoria striker Emiliano Bonazzoli. Sampdoria was reduced to 10 men in the 39th when defender Giulio Falcone received his second yellow card.
Milan, which started the season with an eight-point penalty from the Italian match-fixing scandal, has 36 points -- eight more than Sampdoria.
Inter, which drew 2-2 with Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday, dominated Catania. Ibrahimovic went close on two occasions before Samuel headed in just before the break.
"The match wasn't that easy," Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. "We only just missed on several occasions in the first half, and we scored in the 45th minute. Everything was much easier after Solari's goal."
Solari added a second in the 49th from the edge of the area for his first league goal of the season. Cruz hit the crossbar a minute later.
Grosso made it 3-0 in the 57th with a chip from the left-hand side of the penalty box.
"Grosso's goal was fantastic," Mancini said. "I didn't ask him if he intended to cross or score but the important thing is that it went in."
Grosso started in midfield in the absence of Patrick Vieira and Esteban Cambiasso -- both injured -- and Olivier Dacourt, who was suspended.
Spinesi got behind Inter's defense to beat goalkeeper Julio Cesar in the 65th but Ibrahimovic tapped in two minutes later to make it 4-1.
"Until Spinesi's goal, I'd say we were perfect," Mancini said.
Corona scored in the 74th before Cruz completed the rout in the 77th, latching onto Maicon's cross from midfield.
Spinesi was sent off in the 88th for his second yellow card.
The game took place behind closed doors at Cesena's Dino Manuzzi stadium. A court shut down Catania's Angelo Massimino stadium last week and ordered the Sicilian team to play the remainder of its home games in neutral and empty venues following the Feb. 2 killing of a policeman in rioting at its game against Palermo.
Roma was unlucky not to win by more than three goals.
Midfielder David Pizarro hit the post in the 10th and went close on three other occasions in the first half. Francesco Totti could not beat Reggina goalkeeper Andrea Compagnolo with a free kick, nor from the penalty spot.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
If all goes well when the biggest marathon field ever gathered in Australia races 42km through the streets of Sydney on Sunday, World Marathon Majors (WMM) will soon add a seventh race to the elite series. The Sydney Marathon is to become the first race since Tokyo in 2013 to join long-established majors in New York, London, Boston, Berlin and Chicago if it passes the WMM assessment criteria for the second straight year. “We’re really excited for Sunday to arrive,” race director Wayne Larden told a news conference in Sydney yesterday. “We’re prepared, we’re ready. All of our plans look good on
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
When details from a scientific experiment that could have helped clear Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva landed at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the leader of the organization’s reaction was unequivocal: “We have to stop that urgently,” he wrote. No mention of the test ever became public and Valieva’s defense at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) went on without it. What effect the information could have had on Valieva’s case is unclear, but without it, the skater, then 15 years old, was eventually disqualified from the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for a banned heart medication that would later
