The beleaguered WTA Sony Ericsson International hit another crisis yesterday when the women's tennis tournament was put off by a day due to a general strike in Bangalore.
Organizers gave in to the demands of local police, who predicted trouble during the day-long strike in the southern Indian city in protest at a ruling on water-sharing with a neighboring state.
The US$175,000 event will now start today and run until Sunday.
"This is the first time that we are postponing the start of a tournament due to such a reason," WTA supervisor Melanie Heuer said. "It's going to be hard on the players."
