Bremen triumph in League Cup

Werder Bremen's players celebrate with the trophy after they won the German soccer League Cup final by defeating Bayern Munich in Leipzig, Germany, on Saturday.

Champions League participants Werder Bremen won the German League Cup for the first time on Saturday when they defeated Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final in Leipzig.

Croatian international striker Ivan Klasnic was the hero for his side as he scored in both halves to give Bremen an ideal start to the new season.

Bremen took the lead on the half hour at a time when Bayern seemed to dominate. World Cup top striker Miroslav Klose fed the ball to Klasnic and the Croat slammed the ball from 15m out past Oliver Kahn into the right corner to give the underdogs the lead.

The goal seemed to give Bremen confidence as they took control after going ahead and they deservedly went into the change rooms a goal ahead.

In the second half Bayern, who had not lost in five previous appearances in the final of the competition, tried to get back into the game but failed to create any real chances.
