Tottenham was eliminated from the League Cup by lower-ranked Grimsby on Tuesday in the second round of English football's second-tier knockout competition.
Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala scored in the 89th minute for the 1-0 win at Blundell Park. Grimsby is the leader of League Two -- 60 places below Tottenham, which had fielded a strong side.
"The lads were tremendous," Grimsby manager Russell Slade said. "It is a great night for the town, the club, supporters and players. We have worked so hard this season and we deserved it."
Portsmouth lost 3-2 to Gillingham after extra time.
Other Premier League winners Tuesday were: Aston Villa, Charlton, Birmingham, West Ham, West Bromwich Albion and Wigan.
Tottenham manager Martin Jol was furious, criticizing his underperforming players.
"We deserved it," Jol said. "All credit to them. They didn't do a lot in the second half but it is a big lesson for our lads. If you only create three or four chances against a League Two club you don't deserve anything.
Tottenham was one of 12 Premier League clubs that entered the second round of the League Cup. The remaining eight, which had been given a bye because they had been involved in European competition at any stage of this season, will enter in the third round.
Villa was the biggest winner of the night after scoring seven unanswered goals to beat Wycombe 8-3. Sean Davis, James Milner and Gareth Barry all scored two goals each, with Milan Baros and a Craig Easton own-goal rounding off the comeback.
West Brom beat Bradford 4-1, with Nathan Ellington scoring twice. The Baggies had defender Martin Albrechtsen sent off in the 82nd minute.
Bobby Zamora scored twice and West Ham beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-2. In other results, Charlton beat Hartlepool 3-1, Birmingham won 2-0 at Scunthorpe, Wigan had a 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
Rangers needed three extra-time goals to beat Clyde 5-2 and advance to the fourth round of the Scottish League Cup.
Thomas Buffel scored for Rangers in the fifth and 74th minutes, but the division one club answered with goals from Craig Bryson and Stephen O'Donnell.
During extra time, Federico Nieto scored twice for Rangers on his debut, with Marvin Andrews adding the fifth goal.
In other third-round matches, Inverness Caledonian Thistle beat Dundee United 2-0; Kris Boyd scored in the 90th for Dunfermline to edge Kilmarnock; and Aberdeen beat Stranraer 2-0.
David Clarkson and Darren Lee Smith scored in extra time for Motherwell to beat St. Mirren.
Bayern Munich ran its record league winning streak to 15 matches when Peru forward Paolo Guerrero scored in a 1-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Playing without the injured Michael Ballack, Bayern's sixth straight league win -- the other nine wins were last season -- opened up a five-point gap over second-placed Werder Bremen, a 2-1 loser to Moenchengladbach.
"We played well, but we had a little bit of luck today," Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn said. "We can't take our lead over Bremen too seriously -- these things change fast in football."
Substitute Guerrero headed in from close range in the 72nd minute after good lead-up play from Mehmet Scholl and Ali Karimi. No. 15th-placed Frankfurt's Arie van Lent had earlier missed a couple of chances.
Also, Borussia Dortmund beat Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 and Wolfsburg defeated Hannover 4-2.
Bremen captain Frank Baumann scored an own goal in the 59th, when he tried to kick the ball out of play, to bring about his team's first loss this season.
Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney will miss the next two Champions League matches after being sent off at Villarreal last week.
UEFA said Tuesday that the 19-year-old England international will be absent when Manchester United hosts Benfica on Sept. 27 and at Old Trafford against Lille on Oct. 18.
Rooney received his second yellow card in last Wednesday's 0-0 draw at Villarreal when he sarcastically applauded in referee Kim Milton Nielsen's face after being booked for tripping an opponent.
The referee also reported in his post-match report that Rooney swore at him as he left the field.
In statements to UEFA on Tuesday, Manchester United and Rooney admitted the player's reaction in clapping his hands was wrong. However, UEFA said they contested whether there was subsequent verbal abuse of the referee.
UEFA said Manchester United have until midnight Friday to appeal the decision.
Rooney is already suspended for England's next World Cup qualifying game against Austria on Oct. 8 after receiving a yellow card against Northern Ireland earlier this month.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
Japanese players are moving to English soccer in record numbers and more look set to follow with clubs attracted by their quality, strong work ethic and value for money. Kaoru Mitoma is the standout talent of five Japanese players in the English Premier League, with eight more in the Championship and two in League One. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, the captain of Japan, believes his compatriots are “being held in higher esteem” by English clubs compared with the past. “The staff at Liverpool ask me about lots of Japanese players, not necessarily with a view to a transfer, but just saying this or
Taiwan yesterday survived Bosnia and Herzegovina to win their Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Taipei Tennis Center. The tight series started on Saturday with world No. 123 Jason Tseng losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Mirza Basic in the opening singles matchup. However, teammate Tony Wu kept the tie even, dominating world No. 86 Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 6-1. Tseng then suffered another defeat, losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to Dzumhur in a brutal match that lasted more than two
