He was never in contention after Saturday's downpour, which started just as he'd begun his first qualifying lap. His first qualifying time was almost 25 seconds slower than Fisichella.
After Kimi Raikkonen's mechanical problems forced an aborted start and extra formation lap, the race got underway with Fisichella and Trulli holding their front places.
There were changes on the second row. Coulthard overtook Webber and Jacques Villeneuve dropped from fourth to ninth in his Sauber. Villeneuve finished 13th, two places behind Jenson Button in a BAR-Honda. McLaren's Raikkonen, 10th on the grid, restarted at the back and dueled with Michael Schumacher in the middle of the pack for most of the race.
Narain Karthikeyan, the first Indian driver in F1, slipped from 12th to 18th on his first lap and finished 15th, one place ahead of fellow Jordan rookie Tiago Monteiro of Portugal.
