Four people were killed and eight others injured during a stampede at the end of an African World Cup qualifying match between Togo and Mali.
The stampede occurred late in the match when a power cut caused the lights at Kegue Stadium to go dark Sunday night. The blackout caused panic in one section of the stadium, causing fans to run for the exits.
Togo won the match 1-0.
Three of the injured fans were in intensive care Monday, the Togolese Minister for Health Madame Sussanne Aho Assouma said. The other five have been discharged from the hospital.
Togolese President Gnas-singbe Eyadema ordered an official investigation to determine the cause of the blackout.
Eyadema also said his government would offer financial assistance to the families of the deceased and those who were injured during the stampede. But it was not clear how much money would be given out.
The Kegue Stadium is an ultramodern complex recently built by the Chinese as part of cultural assistance program to the Togolese government, and until recently, power cuts have been a rare occurrence in Togo.
In Zurich, Switzerland, FIFA said it was investigating security breaches at the match.
"The global football family is in mourning today for this tragic loss of life," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said. "The game of football is about joy, but today I feel a great sadness. Such terrible incidents must serve to redouble our efforts to keep safety and security a top priority at all football matches."
