Top seed Kentucky dumped out of NCAA Tournament

REUTERS , NEW YORK

Mo Finley hit a 17-foot jumper with 12.2 seconds remaining as ninth-seeded Alabama-Birmingham shocked top-seeded Kentucky 76-75 in the second round of the St Louis Regional at the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

Kentucky was the No. 1 seeded team in the tournament but was stunned by UAB, who advances to the round of 16 for the first time since 1982.

Gerald Fitch missed a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds to go and a final second tip-in attempt by Kelenna Azubuike rolled off the rim to deny Kentucky a last-gasp win.

Exactly 23 years ago, UAB knocked Kentucky out of the 1981 tournament in what was then another major upset.

Finley had 17 points to lead the winners, while Fitch also had 17 points for Kentucky.

In other NCAA Tournament action, two other top seeded teams were eliminated as third seed North Carolina State lost to No. 6 seed Vanderbilt 75-73 in the Phoenix Region, while the Atlanta Region's No. 2 seed, Mississippi State, was crushed 89-74 by seventh-seeded Xavier.

Matt Freije scored 31 points to lead Vanderbilt to the upset win, with 11 of those points coming in the final 3:28.

Lionel Chalmers scored a career-high 31 points as Xavier pulled away in the second half to end Mississippi State's title aspirations.

In the fourth upset of the eight games played on Sunday, Deron Williams scored 31 points as fifth-seeded Illinois beat fourth-seeded Cincinnati 92-68 in the Atlanta Region.

The top seeded teams won the other four games played Sunday, with the "Sweet 16" now set.

In the East Rutherford Region, No. 2 seed Oklahoma State was an easy winner over seventh seeded Memphis 70-53, while third-seed Pittsburgh got past sixth-seeded Wisconsin 59-55.
