The documentary film Twelve Nights that came out three years ago brought the true face of animal shelters to the big screen and focused public attention on the issue. On March 23, New Taipei City Councilor Tsai Shu-chun went to do an on-site inspection at the Wugu animal shelter, and she urged the New Taipei City Government Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office to make improvements. Tsai called on the office to improve the surroundings and to regularly dispatch workers to sweep the site and collect the trash. Tsai said that the animal shelter “should make the animals feel at home when they are here.”
The Wugu animal shelter is situated on Wailiao Road in Wugu District, in an outlying area that is off the beaten track. The shelter accommodates more than 300 dogs and cats. Tsai said that because no clear directions are given on Wailiao Road, people who want to adopt animals often got lost while driving there, so she called for direction signs to be erected along the road and for the tangled clumps of weeds to be trimmed, as that would make it easier for people to visit.
In addition, before the Lunar New Year, Tsai mustered some veterinarians to help out by spaying 150 bitches at the animal shelter, so as to reduce incidents of fighting and agitation among the male dogs. She is also going to pay out of her own pocket to arrange for sanitation workers to go and sweep the shelter every week. She asked for the cleaning team to support these efforts by going to remove the trash at least three times a week to reduce lingering odors.
