Series of temblors give residents of Taitung little sleep

Residents of Taitung County had a restless night on Tuesday after the county was struck by nine earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 3.6 to 5.1, Central Weather Bureau statistics showed yesterday.

The bureau’s records showed the county was hit by nine temblors between 10:29pm on Tuesday and 6:45am yesterday.

The epicenter of the first quake, of magnitude 4.7, was located 9.8km northwest of Chengkung (成功)The depth of the quake was 5km.

The last quake, of magnitude 3.6, was also centered around the same location. The depth was 14.6km.

Kuo Kai-wen (郭鎧紋), director of the bureau’s seismology center, said the main earthquake occurred at 4:49am yesterday and was magnitude 5.1. It lasted 1.18 seconds. A magnitude 4.1 aftershock came six minutes later.

Both epicenters were also located near the Chengkung observation center, with depths of 10km and 9.8km respectively.

Kuo said the earthquakes mainly affected residents in Taitung.

The epicenters of all the earthquakes were either in Chengkung or Hualien’s Sioulin Township (秀林).
