Police said on Wednesday they were investigating reports of obscene behavior, including public oral sex, at a nudist camp that took place over the weekend in Taitung County.
The gathering of 21 adults from the Kaohsiung area, most of them over the age of 40, has shocked a quiet village on the palm-studded coast of south Taiwan.
The police were responding to a report in Wednesday's Chinese-language Apple Daily newspaper that visitors to the party, which included doctors, civil servants, computer engineers and national servicemen, engaged in oral sex in public and watched pornographic films together.
The group took over a private inn and went running naked outdoors, Taitung County police bureau spokesman Wu Chung-hui (吳宗輝) said yesterday.
Amid complaints from conservative neighbors in the village of Hsingchang (興昌), newspapers ran photos and articles about the event.
Wu said the media reports prompted the investigation.
"We are looking into the behavior at the nudist camp to see whether obscenity was involved, or if there was a violation of public order laws," Wu said.
"According to our customs here, it's hard to accept," he said.
Smaller naked parties have been held in Taitung before, Wu said, but nothing like this.
The investigation is being made more difficult because all of the participants, including nine women and almost everyone over 40, had registered under false names at the inn, Wu said.
They disbanded on Sunday and had not scheduled any further gatherings.
One of the event's organizers told the paper no sexual activity took place at the camp.
