PRC fishing boat abducts two coast guard officers

The Coast Guard Administration yesterday dispatched five cutters and one helicopter to intercept a Chinese fishing boat which had abducted two coast guard officers, the administration said in a press release issued last night.

The episode began yesterday afternoon near one of the Penghu islands (澎湖花嶼).

The two members of the coast guard were carried away after they boarded a Chinese fishing boat for inspection. The two, Tsai Kuang-min (蔡光明) and Yen Wen-cheng (顏文正) from the Penghu Coast Guard Office, had been sent to handle a sideswipe accident between the Chinese fishing boat and a Taiwanese fishing boat.

The Chinese vessel raced off before the two members of the coast guard could return to their patrol boat.

The fugitive boat was intercepted around 9pm.

At press time last night, negotiations between the coast guard and the owner of the Chinese boat were still underway.
