Quanta Computer Inc (廣達電腦), the world’s second-largest notebook maker by shipments, announced yesterday it has formed an alliance with 3M Touch Systems Inc at Computex Taipei to expand collaboration on touch-enabled technology and applications.

“The collaboration combines 3M’s extensive touch technology portfolio and experience in commercial markets and Quanta’s expertise in electronic devices in a move to offer better touch-enabled products for the consumer electronics market,” the statement said.

In the near term, Quanta plans to offer portable devices — including notebooks, netbooks and other consumer electronics — that leverage on 3M technology solutions with single and multi-touch capabilities, it said.

Through 3M’s proprietary knowledge and expertise in touch solutions for finger and stylus input, Quanta will offer touch-enabled consumer electronics that provide light transmission, color neutrality, simple yet advanced gesture input capabilities and industry-leading touch response time.

“We value 3M’s 25 years of experience in developing and manufacturing touchscreen electronics, firmware and sensors to help meet the current and future interactive needs of our customers,” Quanta vice chairman and president C.C. Leung (梁次震) said.

“It is Quanta’s long-standing position in the ODM [original design manufacturer] industry that enables it to understand the importance of providing a variety of robust and reliable touch solutions for their customers’ products,” 3M vice president and general manager Voyl Divljakovic said.
