Sony Corp, the world's second largest consumer-electronics company, will build a chip assembly plant in China as early as next year as its Japanese customers are shifting production to the world's most populated nation, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said citing unidentified company people. The plant will package chips for digital cameras, liquid crystal displays and PlayStation2 game consoles, the paper said. Sony will continue to have front-end chipmaking operations in Japan: printing and etching circuitry onto silicon wafers. Sony will spend up to ?10 billion (US$79.4 million) and may build the factory near its existing plant that makes notebook computers in Beijing, the paper said.
