NEC Corp, Japan's second-largest maker of semiconductors, said it will spin off its non-memory chip business in October. NEC said it will sell shares in the new company as soon as possible and hold 70 percent of the unit after the initial share offering. NEC will also create two other units, it said. While one company will oversee its liquid-crystal display and thin-film-transistor display businesses, the other will focus on plasma displays, NEC said. NEC, whose shares dropped 30 percent this year, had a record loss of ?312 billion (US$2.44 billion) in the year ended March 31, and said it will probably post net income of ?10 billion in the current fiscal year ending March 2003.
