A bid by the executives of Singa-porean industrial giant NatSteel Ltd to take over the company won the backing of analysts and sent share prices soaring yesterday.
NatSteel's executives announced Monday a S$294 million (US$164.25 million) offer for the company in what is believed to be the first management bid for a major Singapore government-linked company (GLC).
The surprise offer was made less than a week after a government economic review committee said the state's role in business should be scaled down.
The offer was made by Crown Central Assets, an investment holding company set up by senior NatSteel executives including president Ang Kong-hua, and vice president Gan Kim-yong.
In a statement to the Singapore Exchange, NatSteel directors said they would take financial and legal advice on the offer which closes on June 17. While the key Straits Times Index lost 1.5 percent yesterday, NatSteel shares closed S$0.16 higher, nearly 10 percent up at 1.78, after hitting a high of 1.81. Under the Crown Central Assets offer, shareholders stood to receive S$1.84 a share.
