In calendar year 2000, Sun Microsystems, Inc surpassed IBM in total server revenue in the UK and grew faster than any other major server company in Western Europe, according to Gartner Dataquest.
In the UK, Sun posted 52 percent growth year-over-year in total server market revenue (which includes systems based on UNIX, Microsoft Windows NT, MVS mainframe and all other operating systems).
Sun also grew faster than its competitors in Germany, Sweden, France, Italy, and Switzerland.
In 2000, Sun grew 35, 46, 37, 58, 60 percent respectively year-over-year. When looking at all of Western Europe, Sun grew 44 percent over that same period.
"In Europe we're taking IBM out one country at a time, and the UK is a significant market," said Shahin Khan, vice president of computer systems at Sun. "The numbers indicate that data center managers prefer Sun Enterprise and Netra servers. The recent introduction of the new Sun Fire server line will further our ability to provide superior customer solutions."
Littlewoods, Britain's largest private company and one of Europe's top retailers, chose Sun hardware because of its flexibility, scalability and because of the unique features of the Sun Enterprise 10000 server, including its ability to handle several domains on the same system.
In order to increase efficiency and reduce overhead, Littlewoods has consolidated its legacy infrastructure of Bull, IBM RS6000, HP and Sequent and onto a new single platform network with four Sun Enterprise 10000 servers at its core.
"The main reason we chose Sun was that we had plans to grow the business substantially and we wanted a platform which would allow us to do that," said David Hallett, Group IT Director at Littlewoods. "You get the feeling that you're in the hands of the experts. If I don't have that feeling, I get worried. Having it helps me to sleep at night."
In 2000, Sun demonstrated astounding growth in the worldwide total server market. Sun grew faster than it's competitors in the worldwide server space and began to overtake them in significant markets.
Sun posted 62 percent year-over-year growth in shipments and 43 percent growth year-over-year in revenue. In revenue, Sun made significant gains on it's competitors.
Sun moved into the top spot in total US server market revenue.
Since its inception in 1982, a singular vision -- The Network Is The Computer -- has propelled Sun Microsystems, Inc, to its position as a leading provider of industrial-strength hardware, software and services that power the Internet and allow companies worldwide to dot-com their businesses.
With US$19.2 billion in annual revenues, Sun can be found in more than 170 countries and on the Internet at www.sun.com.
