A tiger on Thursday escaped from a wildlife park in India’s flood-ravaged Assam and stretched out on a shophouse bed, startling residents and shining a spotlight on the plight of animals caught up in the deluge.
The adult tiger — weighing more than 90kg — was like many other beasts in the World Heritage-listed Kaziranga National Park trying to reach dry land as the reserve became submerged by heavy rains.
Wild buffaloes running in floodwaters, exhausted rhinos resting on patches of land and elephants crossing a road were some of the unusual sights as rangers raced to reach animals struggling in the waters.

More than 50 wild animals have died so far, including some in traffic accidents, as they tried to cross a busy highway outside the park and reach the nearby Karbi hills, local media reported.
The tiger was about to cross the highway when it appeared to change its mind and jumped into a scrap dealer’s tin-roofed compound, sending onlookers into a tizzy.
“The owner was about to open the shop at 8:30 in the morning when he saw the tiger jump inside,” said Bhaskar Choudhury, head veterinarian for the non-profit Wildlife Trust of India. “One of the doors was open and it was dark inside. The tiger decided to go in and sit on the bed.”
Choudhury said instead of tranquilizing the big cat, his organization was waiting for sunset to allow the creature to emerge from the compound and take off on its own.
Meanwhile, forest rangers were using boats to traverse the parklands — now a large expanse of water — as they searched for stranded or injured animals.
“It had been a long time since this type of flood has affected Kaziranga National Park,” forest ranger Pradut Goswami said.
Kaziranga is home to two-thirds of the world’s remaining one-horned rhinos and several have been spotted basking in the sun on a patches of high ground surrounded by water.
The floods, which are in their second week, have so far killed at least 27 people in Assam, sweeping away houses and boats.

Lawyers for the Marine Corps argued that Mast abused his position, disregarded orders of his superiors, mishandled classified information and improperly used a government computer in his fight over the child who was found orphaned on the battlefield in rural Afghanistan
Millions of dollars have poured into bets on who will win the US presidential election after a last-minute court ruling opened up gambling on the vote, upping the stakes on a too-close-to-call race between US Vice President Kamala Harris and former US president Donald Trump that has already put voters on edge. Contracts for a Harris victory were trading between 48 and 50 percent in favor of the Democrat on Friday on Interactive Brokers, a firm that has taken advantage of a legal opening created earlier this month in the country’s long running regulatory battle over election markets. Kim has issued threats to use nuclear weapons pre-emptively numerous times, but his latest warning came as experts said that North Korea could ramp up hostilities ahead of next month’s US presidential election. In a Monday speech at a university named after him, the Kim Jong-un National Defense University, he said that North Korea “will without hesitation use all its attack
US Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is in “excellent health” and fit for the presidency, according to a medical report published by the White House on Saturday as she challenged her rival, former US president Donald Trump, to publish his own health records. “Vice President Harris remains in excellent health,” her physician Joshua Simmons said in the report, adding that she “possesses the physical and mental resiliency required to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.” Speaking to reporters ahead of a trip to North Carolina, Harris called Trump’s unwillingness to publish his records “a further example
