New gun control measures are not the way to prevent mass killings such as the shooting deaths of nine people in a South Carolina church earlier this month, Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush said on Saturday.
Bush, who planned to meet with black ministers in Charleston, South Carolina, today, said identifying potentially violent people before they commit crimes is a better approach than limits on guns.
Bush also said that gun control should be sorted out by states.
“Rural areas are very different than ... teeming urban areas,” he said.
The comments came less than a day after US President Barack Obama eulogized the pastor who was shot to death on June 17 with eight parishioners at Emmanuel African Methodist Church.
“For too long, we have been blind to the unique mayhem that gun violence inflicts upon this nation. Sporadically, our eyes are open,” Obama said. “But I hope we also see the 30 precious lives cut short by gun violence in this country every single day.”
Bush also told reporters that he was disappointed in US Supreme Court rulings from the past week that affirmed Obama’s healthcare reform program and legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
