Indian police have video footage and photographs of men gang raping a woman on the orders of a village elder in a case that has shocked the country, according to two officers working on the case who have seen the material.
The footage and photographs were taken during the Jan. 20 attack when the woman was raped by as many as 13 men in a village in West Bengal State, according to the officers, who asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Police recovered the footage from mobile phones confiscated while arresting the men and it will be used to prosecute them, according to the officers.
The attack was the latest in a series of sexual assaults and gang rapes of women that have stained the image of the world’s second-most populous country.
The village headman allegedly ordered the Hindu woman to be raped because she failed to pay her portion of a 50,000 rupee (US$787) fine for having an affair with a married Muslim man from another community, according to police.
“Many of these men think they can get away with anything because they can get away with other crimes,” said Pradeep Gooptu, founder-trustee of Haven, a charity that works to improve literacy in tribal communities.
Dipesh Ghosh, a lawyer for the detained men, could not confirm that his clients had shot the footage when reached by phone on Sunday.
Alok Rajoria, the most senior policeman in the district where the attack occurred did not answer calls to his mobile phone.
The victim, from a low-caste Hindu community, had an affair with a Muslim man in an area of the country where communities are deeply segregated, according to police.
As punishment, villagers operating outside the law tied them to a tree in the center of the village and ordered them to pay the fine after a late-night show trial, a police report said.
“Since they are not going to give you the money, you can have fun with her or do whatever you like with her,” the village headman told others who had gathered at the trial, according to the police report of the woman’s testimony.
To compensate the victim, the West Bengal State Government has started construction on a house for the woman and her family, according to Monirul Islam, a lawmaker with All India Trinamool Congress, the ruling party in the state.
The home will be built about 15km from where the attack took place in the village, according to one of the police officers involved in the case.
It will cost more than 1 million rupees and will have a consistent electricity and water supply, the police officer said.

France experienced its hottest spring on record, the French weather service said on Tuesday, after an exceptional early heat wave that also broke highs for the season in England and Wales. Meteo-France said the average nationwide temperature over March to May was 13.8°C — about 1.7°C above the norm, and surpassing records set in 2011 and 2020. “The warmest spring since records began in 1900,” it said in a bulletin. All three months were warmer than average, but the onset of an “unprecedented heatwave” late last month pushed the mercury to highs typically seen at the height of the summer. “Our country had never

Dawa Sherpa was last seen on Friday last week descending the mountain, but he did not reach base camp even though his client did. The pair were among the last climbers on the mountain as the climbing season came to an end and the route was dismantled. Dawa was located by a cleaning crew on Thursday morning as he was crawling down the snowy slopes around the Khumbu Icefall, just above
Chinese authorities are snuffing out any remembrance of the deadly 1989 military crackdown on student-led pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, which happened 37 years ago yesterday, in a further tightening of a years-long campaign to erase what happened from public memory. Police told relatives of the victims they would not be allowed to visit a cemetery in Beijing on the anniversary of the crackdown, a person with knowledge of the matter said. Relatives of the victims visited the cemetery on the anniversary for more than 30 years to read memorial statements with police keeping watch, Amnesty International said. Hundreds of people,
