Thirty-five men have opted for the alternative diplomatic service program overseas instead of fulfilling their two-year compulsory military service. That is two less then the 37 conscripts who signed up last year when the alternative service program was launched. The International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) announced yesterday that this year's participants would be going to 23 countries after three months of intensive training. ICDF, the principal body that oversees Taiwan's foreign aid programs, said some would be sent to countries that do not have diplomatic ties with Taiwan, including Fiji and Ecuador, while the rest will be stationed in allied countries. The ICDF said it looked for recruits with specialties in areas such as agriculture, medicine and information technology.

The High Court yesterday overturned a Taipei District Court decision to release Taiwan People’s Party Chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and sent the case back to the lower court. The Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office on Saturday questioned Ko amid a probe into alleged corruption involving the Core Pacific City development project during his time as Taipei mayor.
