The number of cases of locally contracted dengue fever has risen to 937, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday. Of these, 479 were in Kaohsiung City and 441 in Kaohsiung County. The remaining 17 cases were discovered in Taipei City, Taipei County, Taoyuan County, Taichung City, Taichung County, Chiayi County, Pingtung County, Hualien County and Penghu County. There were also 28 cases of the disease that had been contracted abroad. The CDC said that of the 17 isolated cases, 14 were contracted while traveling to the Kaohsiung area. Health officials urge anyone suffering from symptoms similar to those of dengue fever, such as high fever, severe headache, back ache, joint pain, nausea or a rash, to seek medical help as soon as possible.

One person was killed and another seven injured today when a tourist shuttle bus plunged 30m to 40m down a ravine in Nantou County, the Tourism Administration said. The bus is suspected to have suddenly accelerated out of control near the flower center of the Sun-Link-Sea Forest Recreation Area, a popular attraction during cherry blossom season. Of the eight onboard, a 66-year-old man was killed, four were seriously injured and three sustained minor injuries, including the driver. The Nantou County Police Department said it received a report of the incident at 12:15pm and dispatched seven teams to assist. All surviving passengers have been transferred
