Some 100 garlic farmers from around the nation gathered at the Legislative Yuan yesterday to protest the importation from China of garlic bulbs for planting. The farmers voiced their strong opposition to a proposal made by the Taipei County Farmer's Association that Taiwan should import up to 300 tonnes of garlic bulbs for planting. At a public hearing the farmers challenged the Council of Agriculture to make an "acceptable" comment on the proposal. They argued that Taiwan does not need to import garlic from any country at the moment as domestic output is sufficient. In addition, they claimed, more than 99 percent of the garlic bulbs originating from China carry a virus.
