Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa has offered Taiwan tonnes of free water to relieve the drought, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday. The government is considering the offer but wants to monitor water supplies and rainfall this month before deciding whether to accept, ministry spokeswoman Katharine Chang (張小月) said. Authorities in Okinawa, the closest Japanese province to Taiwan, said Tuesday they could provide 3,000 tonnes of water daily to Taiwan for two months, Chang said. "We appreciate Japan's warm-hearted and generous offer," Chang said. Some rain fell throughout the country from Wednesday to Friday but it was insufficient to ease water shortages, especially serious in the northern part of the island, officials said.
