Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc bought NT$5 billion (US$146 million) worth of bad loans from Fubon Financial Holding Co (富邦金控) as the US securities company extends its investments in the nation's distressed debt market.
Fubon will write off losses on the sale of the bad loans in five years and does not expect the
write off to hurt its profitability this year, the bank said in a statement.
Lehman last month agreed to buy bad loans with a face value of about US$131 million from First Commercial Bank (第一銀行), the nation's largest publicly traded lender by assets.
In November, Lehman was one of several investors that bought bad loans auctioned by a local asset management company set up to handle bad loans for Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (工商銀行), the nation's biggest lender. Like rivals Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co and Goldman Sachs Group Inc, the company has been seeking value in distressed Asian debt.
